Heavy harvest: how to support pumpkins, melons, and heavy fruit

It is the best part of gardening: late summer. The days get shorter, but the vegetable garden is full of the promise of a great harvest. Heavy bunches of tomatoes, thick cucumbers, and the real heavyweights: pumpkins and melons. Beginners often let these giants crawl on the ground, but as an experienced gardener, you know that growing them upwards is the best way to save space, prevent disease, and let the fruit get the most sun.

But keeping a pumpkin or melon in the air takes serious work. Thin bamboo sticks or simple string will break during the first autumn wind or heavy rain. How do you make sure these fragile giants can grow safely without touching the ground or breaking their own stems? With super strong supports and smart tricks!

1. Build a very strong base

Even with the strongest frame, the plant itself sometimes struggles to hold its own fruit. A hanging melon or pumpkin can tear off the stem from its own weight, long before it is ready to pick. The solution? Make little 'hammocks'.

How does it work? Use old tights, onion nets, or pieces of burlap. Put the growing fruit in the net and tie the ends to the steel Peacock support grid – NOT to the plant stem! The material stretches as the fruit grows, while the strong Peacock grid holds all the weight. This way, your harvest grows safely in the air.

2. The hammock trick for hanging fruit

Sometimes a plant grows faster or taller than you thought, and the top suddenly catches a lot of wind. Standard support rings are often too low when the autumn storms begin, but the Peacock system solves this. Our supports are adjustable: using the smart connectors, you can easily slide the support ring or grid higher up the pin. This lets you support the stems exactly where the wind hits them hardest.

3. Keep resting giants off the wet ground

Do you have enough space and choose to let some large pumpkins or zucchinis grow flat on the ground? Then make sure they do not touch the soil. On the wet, cold autumn ground, there is a big chance of mold, rotting, and bugs (like slugs).

The Peacock solution: Use a low support grid or a wide plant ring, placed on short ground pins. Carefully put the young fruit on top of this. This creates airflow under the fruit, keeps it dry, and lets it grow and color evenly on all sides.

4. Grow along with the plant

Melons and pumpkins are fast climbers that grow very quickly. Before you know it, they outgrow their first climbing frame. The great thing about the Peacock connectable plant supports is that you can always add more. With our handy connectors, you can quickly attach extra ground pins or grids to your frame. You simply build your support system higher (or wider), exactly as fast as your plant grows.

5. Guide the vines, but do not force them

Heavy climbing plants have strong but sometimes stiff vines. Help the plant by gently pushing the young stems through the holes of the Peacock grid. But do not force them; pumpkin and cucumber stems break quite easily. Use soft tying material or our special, wide plant clips to carefully guide stubborn branches toward the steel supports. Once they grab onto the metal, the plant's own curling vines will do the rest of the hard work.
